An experience in developing embedded software using JNI

Embedded software grows more and more rapidly and complicatedly. This paper proposes a new structure and a comprehensible process to develop embedded software in JNI, a new programming framework allowing Java code running in a JVM to call or be called by native application and library written in C/C++. Therefore, programmer can develop application that benefit the simplicity and reusability features of Java and can always reuse legacy code for controlling device effectively written in C/C++ for embedded applications. Some experiences have summarized through two implemented case studies.

An integrated approach for an academic advising system in adaptive credit-based learning environment

Nowadays, with the growing importance of the credit-based learning in current educational environment, strong academic advising system is an essential ingredient of learner success, supporting personalized advices aimed at effective and efficient learning. In that context, within the scope of this paper, an intelligent academic advising system approach is introduced focusing on integrating technology-enhanced learning methodologies into a pedagogy-driven and service-oriented architecture based on semantic technology. Specifically, a knowledge-based framework is conceptually introduced, assisting learners in identifying and assessing academic alternatives for their life goals as well as making meaningful educational plans that are effectively compatible with those goals. In the proposed framework, the learning data warehouse plays a key part with information about learners’ behavior and navigation so that intelligent algorithms can be applied and patterns can be obtained as the basis for course advising. Moreover, a data integration prototype is studied and developed as a resource discovery tool to map, convert and harvest advising related information from structured and semi-structured learning repositories. Thus, the described framework emphasizes its application within an open adaptive credit-based learning, providing abilities for accessing and managing, in an integrated manner, the adaptive interaction, adaptive course delivery as well as adaptive content discovery and assembly.

A program anomaly intrusion detection scheme based on fuzzy inference

A major problem of existing anomaly intrusion detection approaches is that they tend to produce excessive false alarms. One reason for this is that the normal and abnormal behaviour of a monitored object can overlap or be very close to each other, which makes it difficult to define a clear boundary between the two. In this paper, we present a fuzzy-based scheme for program anomaly intrusion detection using system calls. Instead of using crisp conditions, or fixed thresholds, fuzzy sets are used to represent the parameter space of the program sequences of system calls. In addition, fuzzy rules are used to combine multiple parameters of each sequence, using fuzzy reasoning, in order to determine the sequence status. Experimental results showed that the proposed fuzzy-based detection scheme reduced false positive alarms by 48%, compared to the normal database scheme.

A new natural source of Camphor from Cinnamomum longepetiolatum Costerm. apud Phamh. in Vietnam

Essential oil of Cinnamomum longepetiolatum Costerm. apud Phamh. Obtained by hydro distillation. The essential oil yield was 0.91% in fresh leaves. The chemical composition of this oil was study by GC and GC/MS. Twelve compounds were identified representing 98.8% of this oil with camphor as major constituent (87.5%). Eleven other compounds were found with lower content. The results of this study shows that Cinnamomum longepetiolatum Costerm. apud Phamh. was a new natural source of camphor in Vietnam.

A knowledge management approach of ICT

Under the influence of globalization, and the impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that modify radically our relationship with space and time, the hierarchical company locked up on its local borders becomes an Extended Company, without borders, opened and adaptable. In this context, from a Knowledge Management view point, the employees at their computerized desktop need to access new types of information. In this paper, we introduce our group of researches’ definition of Knowledge Management. Then we present the concept of Extended Company and we analyze the new information needs of the Knowledge Worker at his computerized desktop. We propose the Knowledge Worker Desktop’s Model (KWDM), which highlights three types of data to be considered in the development of ICT applications: "mainstream" data, "shared" data, and "source-of-knowledge" data. We conclude with the perspective of a Digital Information System (DIS) centered on the knowledge-worker, which becomes a new way to design the architecture of a Digital Information System adapted to an Extended Enterprise.
